Teaching Process

As a process for the novice we start with small bowls progressing to larger ones, then mugs, plates and vases.  Time is also spent learning how to use the slab roller and molds.  Teaching is accomplished through step by step demonstration and indirect person to person guidance.

After each glaze firing the small group members (5) are given the opportunity to share their methodology and say what if anything they would do differently before receiving feedback from the group and Al.  Students are encouraged to use a notebook to describe the weight of the clay used, size of objects made, glazes used in the order they are used.

All finished pieces have a tag with the students name and glazes used.  All finished pieces are left in the studio for one week so that all other students in the semester have the opportunity to see the items and read about the glazing procedures.

The small group interaction is designed to provide support and stimulation for further work.  Potters working alone do not have this opportunity.
